Rules of Basketball

Learning the rules of basketball is not very difficult, because the game of basketball has not changed much since its beginnings. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and some of the best players can be found in the National Basketball Association, or NBA.

The basic rules of basketball you will see here are set by the NBA. Although some rules associated with time limits are adjusted during tournament play, the rules of basketball used by the NBA are generally the most frequently used rules in the game.

Rules of Basketball - The Basics

According to the NBA rules, a basketball game is divided into 4 quarters with a 15 minute break at the halfway point. Each quarter is 12 minutes long, and any game breaks other than halftime last 2 minutes.

The object of basketball is to score the most baskets. This is done by shooting at the net as often as possible while preventing the opposing team from scoring at the same time. A normal basketball shot is worth 2 points, but if you make a basket by shooting from outside the 3-point arc, that shot gains your team 3 points.

Rules of Basketball - The Teams

Each basketball team has 5 players, 7 substitutes and 1 coach. The substitute is only allowed to come into the game during a break. Generally, players wear matching uniforms which include a jersey with the team logo on the front and the player's number on the back.

During a basketball game, the referee is in charge of keeping order. There are also table officials that log statistics, keep time and track other important information.

Rules of Basketball - Game Play

There are some restrictions to game play as well. For example, the basketball has to stay inside the court at all times, you cannot stop moving while dribbling the basketball, and you have a limited time frame in which to take a shot. There are also fouls - both personal and technical - that can be called on players in the game for bad or unfair behavior.

Rules of Basketball - Positions

Each player has a specific position on the basketball court. These include the Center, Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Power Forward and Small Forward. Practice is important to playing your position well. It's also a good idea to listen to the coach.

The game of basketball has become one of the most popular sports in history, and this is due in large part to the amazing play of Michael Jordan. With the basic rules laid out for you, now you can hit the court and see why basketball is loved by so many people from all over the world.
